  • Introduction Message from our New President

    I wanted to introduce myself as the new President of Coastal Cyclists and update you on some happenings and new initiatives we are planning for this year. Firstly, I’d like to thank my predecessor Stewart McKeever and our outgoing Treasurer, David Champagne, for stewarding the Club through the Pandemic (and for several years prior). The new Board is a mix of experience in the shape of past Presidents Phil Whirley (Treasurer) and Bruce Snyder (Century Ride Director) as well as returning Secretary Paul Keefer and then new blood in our Vice President, Rick Jess and our members at large, Larry Green, Jr. and Caroline Raho.

    I’ve served on the Board of the Club in the past and for the past ten years I’ve helped run one of the most successful cycling clubs in our summer home of Ridgefield, CT, with almost 500 members and weekly rides with almost 100 riders. Hopefully I can bring some of that experience to bear here.

    The first announcement is that our weekend rides will move back to their 8am “summer hours” start times effective with the first ride after 4/15 and running through 12/15. The second is that, after a Pandemic hiatus, our Spring Century ride on April 16 is officially a sell out with over 500 riders! We do still need volunteers, however, particularly for manning the rest stops on the day of the ride. Please reach out to myself or Paul (pkeeferbfw@gmail.com) if you’re interested.

    We have a number of new initiatives on the docket for the months immediately after the ride. First and foremost, we need your opinions. We want to understand why you’re a member and if you’re not a member, why not. In order to make a better club we need to know where to make the most impactful changes. To that end you’ll be receiving a link to a survey in late April which will hopefully arm us with that information.

    That being said, we already have some ideas of what we should be looking at to enhance the appeal of the Club. We will be engaging a part time marketing specialist to better communicate with cyclists throughout greater Charleston. Larry will be looking into offering more moderate pace levels at our club rides. Caroline will be reaching out to the other cycling groups in town to see if we can foster collaboration for the benefit of all. Rick is helping us upgrade our website. I’m looking into offering a monthly destination ride for all levels where we get away from our usual routes and stretch our legs north or south or west. Sponsorship being my business, I’m also talking to some potential restaurant sponsors about a weekly ride that can involve a food stop at the end and having them become our “Club House”.

    Significant change won’t happen overnight, but it won’t happen at all unless we understand the issues and have a group of smart and motivated people to take the balls and run with them. If you have any thoughts or would like to help us, just send me a note or say hi on one of the club rides in the coming weeks.

  • 15 More Spring Century Ride Volunteers Needed

  • April 16, 2022 Coastal Century Spring Ride Event

    This Spring's Coastal Century ride event is completely sold out with 500 registered riders. Ride features clearly marked 33, 43, 65 and 100 mile route options with more riders than ever challenging themselves to complete our longest 100 mile route.

    The Sunday Mount Pleasant ride start time will change to from 9 AM to 8 AM starting on April 17th. 

  • Saturday James Island/Folly Beach Ride - Time Change

    The Saturday James Island/Folly Ride start time will change to 9 AM beginning with the Dec. 11th ride. We do this every year during cold weather to get one more hour of warming and the sun higher in the sky before the ride. The time will return to 8 AM in the spring when the weather warms again.

  • Sunday Afternoon Daniel Island Ride

    We're pleased to announce that club members Lenore and Peter Dumas have volunteered to serve as the new ride leaders for the weekly Sunday afternoon ride on Daniel Island.

    The ride is made of two sections at 2 pm and at 3 pm. Anyone may ride either sections or both sections of the ride. Post ride social gathering at local eating.

     

    It will be leaving from Guggenheim Terrace (located across from Central Island Street) on Island Park Drive, Daniel Island.

  • Sunday Mt. Pleasant ride is back on!

    We're pleased to announce that club member Lloyd Hepburn has volunteered to serve as the new ride leader for the weekly Sunday ride in Mount Pleasant.

    The ride will resume this Sunday, May 2nd, at 8 am, leaving from Mount Pleasant Towne Centre as usual. The ride will be unchanged with all of the usual stops and route remaining the same.

    Due to water main construction on the Ben Sawyer causeway, we will ride on the road itself until the path reopens.

    All unvaccinated riders are asked to ride behind the group.

    Thanks to Lloyd and Bob Markisello for bringing our weekend scheduled rides back online.

    COVID-19 is still a risk and like any other risk associated with cycling, individuals must take responsibility for themselves. Participants should wear face covering or maintain physical distance as they deem necessary.
    Where: 1700 Towne Centre Way, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Park at the Mount Pleasant Towne Centre parking lot in front of Men's Wearhouse.

    Time: 8:00 am

    Distance: 30-40+ miles

    Speed: At your own place, but it usually separates out into 15-18 and 19-22+ mph groups

    Route: Coming soon - we're planning on rolling out our club Ride With GPS route library to current members before the end of Q2.

    Details: Meet at Men's Wearhouse in Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and ride through the Old Village, to Patriots Point (with an optional bridge climb), across the islands and back to Towne Centre. Three short breaks to regroup and socialize.

    We're excited to announce that we're gradually resuming our our weekly club rides, starting with the Saturday James Island/Folly ride. It's going to be brisk but sunny tomorrow, with little wind. Come join us!

    COVID-19 is still a risk and like any other risk associated with cycling, individuals must take responsibility for themselves. Participants should wear face covering or maintain physical distance as they deem necessary.

    All riders are expected to physically distance before and after the ride, and during stops.
    Where: 1291 Folly Rd, Charleston, SC 29412. Park at Island Plaza shopping center along the Grimball Rd side of the parking lot in front of Gold's Gym.

    Time: 9:00 am

    Distance: 30 miles

    Speed: at your own place, but it usually separates out into 15-18 and 19-22+ mph groups

    Route: Coming soon - we're planning on rolling out our club Ride With GPS route library to current members before the end of Q2.

    Details: This is the route of the traditional Saturday morning club ride which takes you through James Island out to Folly Beach and back. The route highlights quintessential Lowcountry features like the beautiful marsh land along Sol Legare road and the waves of the Atlantic when you get to Folly Beach. The regular ride stops at the County Pier on Folly Beach for a break and re-grouping, then again at the pocket park on Folly Road on the way off the island. (NOTE: The county pier is closed until 2024)
